Cantilever Post
Would a bump out bay window be better supported by a cantilever system or a foundation support?
We’re considering adding a 4′ deep x 8′ wide bump out with bay window on the first floor of our two story home- one contractor is proposing a cantilever system with post in concrete footing for support while another is proposing a foundation for it. There’s a deck on the same side the window will go on and it’s supported by posts. Aesthetically the cantilever/post will look best but I want to do what’s structurally sound for the house. Will a cantilever system cause the window to sag or bounce over time? Thank you for your input.
Regarding extra weight: the bay window will have a seat with storage area and a 3′ diameter table and 2 chairs will be partially placed in the added space.
I am surprised that they are suggesting a cantilever system. 4 feet is a long distance and you will have people plus furniture in a bay that large.
For an unbraced cantilever deck, our local codes require that the beams run twice the depth of the deck into the home framing. My guess is that he is using posts with footings and diagonal braces instead of a true cantilever but it will still put some huge stresses on the house structure that the post is attached to.
You can have almost the same look by mounting the outer two corners on posts with proper foundation footings and make the posts look like they belong with the house.
Depending on where you live, you might want to consider enclosing the base so that winter wind does not get in. Any insulation will work much better without the wind being there.
